Learn to drive

Once you have your provisional driving licence, you can start lessons with one of our fully qualified instructors.

After you’ve mastered the basics of vehicle control and understand correct road procedures, private practice will help accelerate your progress. We recommend practising with a friend or family member who is over 21 and has held a full driving licence for at least three years. Regular, non-professional practice builds confidence behind the wheel and helps you become comfortable driving in a wider range of situations.

What the theory test includes:

• Multiple-choice section

  • 50 questions covering the Highway Code, traffic signs and essential driving skills.

  • You have 57 minutes to complete the 50 questions.

  • Pass mark: 43 correct answers.

• Hazard perception section

  • 14 scenario videos: 13 contain one developing hazard and 1 contains two (so 15 hazards in total).

  • You score up to 5 points per hazard (up to 10 points on the one video with two hazards). The faster you identify a developing hazard, the higher your score for that hazard.

  • Pass mark: 44 out of 75.

You must pass both the multiple-choice and hazard perception sections in the same test session to pass the theory test overall.

Examples of a developing hazard

• A car pulling out in front of you.

• A cyclist swerving into the road.

• Animals or horses approaching the carriageway. These are situations that would require you to change speed and/or direction.

Support and adjustments for learning difficulties or disabilities

• If you need extra support, arrangements can include extra time (up to double), voiceovers, a reader or a recorder, and a separate room.

• You must declare any support needs when booking the test so the necessary arrangements can be made.

• Most adjustments require supporting evidence such as a doctor’s letter, an educational report or other relevant documentation.

Your instructor will let you know when your driving is up to test standard and that you are ready to book your test. As professional driving instructors, we focus on making you a safe, confident driver who can handle real-world road situations.

What to expect next

• Assessment: Your instructor will assess your ability to handle junctions, lane discipline, speed control, observation, manoeuvres and independent driving.

• Booking: Once your instructor confirms you’re ready, you can book the driving test. They may help you choose an appropriate test centre and date.

• Final lessons: Many learners take a few final lessons to polish weak areas and practise mock tests under exam conditions.

• Test day: Bring your provisional licence, theory test pass certificate (if applicable), and a suitable vehicle. Arrive on time and stay calm — your instructor can give last-minute tips before the examiner begins.
